Odoo 20 Is Here: The Most Important Technical Changes
Julia von JZ Webservices

Odoo 20 was released in September 2026. Besides a long list of functional improvements, the new version brings a number of technical changes that matter for anyone running Odoo, developing custom modules or integrating Odoo with other systems. Here is our overview of what is new – and what you should check before upgrading.

AI moves into the core of Odoo

The most visible theme of Odoo 20 is artificial intelligence. AI agents were already introduced in Odoo 19; in Odoo 20 they become much more capable:

  • Agentic automation: AI agents can be triggered by automated and scheduled actions and can create and update records.
  • MCP support: external AI tools can connect to your database via the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
  • More AI features in the apps: for example AI-powered financial insights in Accounting, bill line prediction, AI-assisted product editing in eCommerce and AI file renaming in Documents.
  • Voice dictation for requests to AI agents.

Good to know: according to the release notes, AI features in Odoo 20 require IAP credits.

Technical changes for developers

  • New minimum requirements: Odoo 20 requires at least Python 3.12 (supported up to 3.14) and PostgreSQL 16. Self-hosted installations on older servers need to be updated first.
  • Owl 3: the web client is based on the next major version of Odoo's frontend framework Owl. Custom JavaScript components and widgets have to be reviewed and ported.
  • Icons: the interface switches from Font Awesome to Material Symbols. Custom views and snippets that rely on Font Awesome classes should be tested.
  • Chatter tracking reworked: tracking values are no longer stored; the tracking message is generated on the fly. Custom code or reports that read tracking values directly need to be adapted.
  • Push notifications no longer rely on Firebase but on Odoo's own infrastructure.
  • Website themes: the body tag now gets page-specific classes (for example o_website_sale_products), which makes targeted styling in themes much easier.

APIs and integrations

The JSON-2 API, introduced with Odoo 19, is the recommended way to connect external systems. The old /xmlrpc, /xmlrpc/2 and /jsonrpc endpoints still exist in Odoo 20, but they are deprecated and – according to the deprecation notice in the Odoo source code – scheduled for removal in Odoo 22. If your integrations still use XML-RPC, now is a good time to plan the migration.

Website and eCommerce

  • AI Website Assistant that can edit building blocks, create pages and forms and change menus.
  • llms.txt can be created in the website settings to help AI systems understand your content.
  • SEO: structured data is added to pages by default, and sitemaps only include indexable URLs.
  • Forms: file-type restrictions, character limits and e-mail domain limits.
  • eCommerce: minimum order quantities, stock-based publishing, tax display per pricelist, a range filter for numeric attributes, return management in the customer portal and a preferred delivery date.

Highlights in the business apps

  • General: offline mode for creating, editing and deleting records, multi-record drag and drop in list and Kanban views and pinned messages in the chatter.
  • Accounting: parent accounts replace account groups, accounting without the Inventory app and paying bills via the PISP interface.
  • CRM: lead generation now uses the Dun & Bradstreet database instead of Clearbit.
  • Project: project roles, separation of collaborators and followers and creating projects from opportunities.
  • Manufacturing: new Kanban and Gantt views for work orders, continuous production and splittable manufacturing orders.
  • Calendar: multiple and shared team calendars and two-way sync with several Google calendars.

Should you upgrade now?

For many companies, Odoo 20 is an attractive upgrade – especially if you want to use the new AI and automation features. Before upgrading a production database, we recommend:

  1. Test the upgrade on a copy of your database and check your most important processes.
  2. Review custom modules: Python code, Owl components, views using Font Awesome icons and anything that reads chatter tracking values.
  3. Check your integrations and plan the move from XML-RPC/JSON-RPC to the JSON-2 API.
  4. Self-hosted: make sure your server provides Python 3.12+ and PostgreSQL 16+.
  5. Check changed structures such as account groups (now parent accounts) or reports you rely on.

We help you with Odoo 20

We develop custom Odoo modules and support you with upgrades – from the analysis of your customisations to porting your modules to Odoo 20 and migrating your integrations to the JSON-2 API.
